An “Impossible” Puzzle That Is Surprisingly Easy! Can you do it?!

Brain teasers have a way of taking over the internet, causing debate, confusion, and plenty of clever answers. This matchstick puzzle looks completely simple at first glance, but it is tricking almost everyone who attempts it.

The challenge is simple: Make a number smaller than 731 by moving only 1 stick.

The Intentionally Wrong Answer

If you move the top horizontal stick on the 7 and slide it to the bottom of the 1, you end up with 131—which is obviously impossible since the 7 would collapse into a straight line!

Or what if you move the top horizontal bar of the 3 over to make it a 2? You’d get 721, but that leaves an extra stick hanging with nowhere to go.

Clearly, it’s easy to get stumped when your brain tries to overcomplicate the rules.

Why Simple Puzzles Drive Us Crazy

Matchstick math problems test our spatial reasoning and ability to think outside the box. Much like navigating contentious debates on school dress codes or deciding how to handle a bag of cash found on the side of the road, people naturally view things from entirely different angles.

When we face a tricky brain teaser, our minds tend to lock onto rigid mathematical rules rather than considering creative structural changes. It shows how easily a small detail can throw us off, similar to the initial confusion during a tense public confrontation that turned peaceful or when observing a stranger freezing out in the cold.

Did You Figure It Out?

I tried moving the top stick of the 7 to make 131, but people keep telling me that’s totally wrong!

Can you spot the actual solution? Drop your answer in the comments below and prove how smart you are!

Spoiler Alert: The Real Answer!

If you’re completely stumped, here is how you get 137 by moving just 1 matchstick:

Take the top horizontal stick from the 7 (turning the 7 into a 1) and move it over to the top of the 1 on the far right to turn it into a 7.

You get 137—which is much smaller than 731!
