It Takes a Teacher

“A man can only attain knowledge with the help of those who possess it. This must be understood from the very beginning. One must learn from him who knows.” —George Gurdjieff

To save the endangered eagles, wildlife biologists have found, you need sea otters.

The beloved sea otter off the coast of California eats sea urchins, which in turn eat kelp. When the otter population was diminished by overhunting, sea urchins took over and diminished the kelp beds. Later, when conservation helped to bring back the otters, they ate sea urchins again and the kelp beds recovered. As a result, the kelp once again began washing up on beaches and attracting bugs, which attracted rodents that ate the bugs. Then the eagles came to eat the rodents. To keep eagles, you need sea otters.

Even devoted naturalists wouldn’t have thought of that on our own. Rather, we learn from one another about the complexity of Nature’s working. In the same way, many spiritual traditions, such as the Christian, Sufi, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions, emphasize the master-disciple relationship. When you truly hunger, pray, and search for the truth, you may meet a true teacher, a master whose human shape, voice, and wisdom reflect your own inner teacher. The master can then teach you to receive the message of your own inner teacher.

Your inner teacher requires an outer teacher in the same way that the eagle requires the otter, as a part of the cycle of life and enlightenment.

I enjoyed that. I think I will remember it as the Otter and the Eagle.
Maybe the teacher could update us on the efforts in the Atlantic to save the Sargasso Sea.I have seen some nice deposits of fresh kelp and I know first hand what that does for fishing and diving. It brings life to the sea.

Hi Tedzee, your suggeston about the Sargasso Sea is ambitious, but I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for your support!
