Power of Prayer

July 15th, 2010

“Prayer is not an old woman’s idle amusement. Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action.” —Mahatma Gandhi

Sunlight floods our lives with one of the major sources of energy in the world. When you feel sun warming the tops of your shoulders, you might let it remind you of your own energy, your power, that can create more happiness in your life. This quality of self-power is missing in the most miserable lives. People who feel helpless and powerless are likely to feel joyless, too.

What does power mean to you? Where does it reside in your body? Tune in to the feeling that you are powerful. The power may derive from something greater than yourself, outside yourself, that resides inside you. This Higher Power, or God, beyond thoughts, words and emotions, is closer than thinking, feeling, and breathing. “Closer than your own thumbnail,” say the ancient Indian texts, the Upanishads. Even closer than consciousness itself. This is also likely to be the place of prayer within yourself.
